The Magna Charta Observatory (MCO) is a global organization committed to protecting the fundamental values of academic freedom and institutional independence. In 1988, the University of Bologna and the European University Association founded MCO with the latter being anchored in the Magna Charta Universitatum, a document signed in Bologna in 1988 by 388 Rectors of worldwide main universities, that defines and affirms the essential roles of universities in society. It is of paramount importance for MCO to help universities maintain high standards and integrity while also upholding freedom from economic and political pressure. Through a wide network from more than 90 countries, MCO urges institutions to reaffirm their dedication to high-quality education and academic independence. While preserving their values, institutions must address new challenges and the Magna Charta Observatory offers the necessary resources and researches that empower these institutions. This international advocacy fosters an educational environment that encourages social progress, cultural and sustainable development, respects diversity and promotes inclusive dialogue.
